House above the Sea
Sitting on the hill overlooking Monopoli, the house is conceived as a ’L shape’ open to the panoramic view
The landscape of Puglia is exceptional. The sea is Turquoise and crystal clear. The coast offers a variety of scenary: caves and bays hidden in the rocks, white sand beaches. The back land is just as wonderful.
It is characterised by historic villages, hills and wide open landscapes, where many cultures such as the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Norman have left their marks.
And right there, close to the fishing town of Monopoli was built a modern house by a german yoga teacher and shiatsu therapist to give the space to her life and daily practice.
In the short part of the ‘L’ is located the yoga and shiatsu studio as well as a guest bathroom.
The long part of the ‘L’ unravels a long open space composed of a kitchen, living room, bedroom and a bathroom, all oriented towards the terrace with its panoramic sea view. All rooms can be closed by large sliding doors.
Left open in the daily living, the rooms are flowing the one into the other; harmomiously led by huge bay windows giving a fantastic view on the Adriatic Coast...but before all merging inside and outside bringing nature into the home and the home into nature
In every season the windows are reflecting the incredible landscape into the house. Inside and outside are completely integrated. The large terrace can be accessed from every room. The indoor rooms offer protection from the rain showers of the winter period as well as from the great heat of the middle of the day in the summer months.
Thanks to the mild climate, life can take place for most of the year outside as well as inside. The contact with nature is a constant inspiration. On the back-walls of the house, are integrated wardrobes, which offer sufficient storage space without disturbing the openess of the house and the flow between the rooms. The upper part of the back-walls are built with glass-bricks which allow the sun and light to enter from above.
Inside the house all the materials used have been kept in their natural colors or are white. Only the kitchen and bathrooms have been realised using a certain technique with colored cement. Only one technique and material has been used in the construction of these rooms including the sinks and showers. Consequently, the overall appearance remains harmonious, quiet and concentrated.
Despite its seemingly audacious architecture the house blends perfectly in nature and the architectural context of the region. The choice of red has been carefully studied. It is a typical colour of the area and assimilates the red intensity of the soil, which is in harmonious contrast with the different greens of the trees and the blue from the sky. The house is 130 m2 and surrounded by 5000 m2 of land with over 25 olive trees and numerous fruit trees such as fig, almond, cherry, pear, prune, pomegranate. The warm water is produced by solar panels, and the floor heating powered by photovoltaic energy and a thermo-fire place. It is composed of 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, lounge, kitchen and a garage. The house is located 8 km from Monopoli and is easily reachable from abroad thanks to the airport of Bari and Brindisi both at a distance of 60 km.
